I guess the best place to begin is how I wound up in Iraq in the first place. I guess it was around seven or eight years ago that I had everything going for me. I owned an auto repair shop and a manufacturing facility where we made fitness equipment for a national fitness franchise. I was racing quite a bit, and things couldn't be better. In the middle of 2003 I sold the repair shop to focus on the manufacturing facility. That was the beginning of my troubles. The franchise I bulit equipment for found itself in financial trouble the next year, and they couldn't pay their bill with me. The responsible thing for me would have been to close up shop and regroup, but I thought we could carry on. I kept my employees working while I looked for new contracts, and I paid them out of my personal savings. The new contracts never came, and eventually my savings were drained. I felt my employees were counting on me, but eventually we all lost out.The business wasn't the only that went sour. In all my efforts to save the business my marriage was failing, and we wound up getting a divorce. My world was definitely crumbing at that point. I owed alot of people money, but I refused to consider bankruptcy. I went to everyone I owed and tole them they'd be paid back in full. I didn't know how long it would take, but I'd do it.At the end of '04 I bought back the repair shop. My plan was to work my tail off for a year, and if I hadn't started my financial recovery I'd move somewhere else and find work. Even though the next year went fairly well I was barely getting out of debt. I knew things weren't working out.A friend of mine told me about a company in Iraq that was hiring. After doing some research I realized it could be my chance to pay off my debtors and start to get ahead again. My family and friends weren't pleased at all with my decision, but I knew it could be my way to recover. Five years later I'm ready to go home and start over again. It's been an eye-opening experience for sure, and I'll come back to Texas a new man.

Back in Iraq

Well, it's June, and I'm back in Iraq. I had a short taste of home in Texas earlier this month, and I can't wait until I get to return for good hopefully in August.
It's been five years since I first came over here to work contracts for the US military, and my return home reminded me how much I miss it. I left great family, great friends, and my passions afor racing cars, riding motorcycles, and flying airplanes when I came over here. Over the next couple of months I'd like to share some of my past and my goals for the future with my blog. Thank you for coming along for the ride.

Welcome!

Hey everybody, this is Danny!
